The Digital Society: Opportunities and Risks

Digitization has created many new opportunities. The Internet and smart technology are having an impact in production and in private life – transforming both the economy and society. But technological progress does not automatically mean more freedom or a better society. Only if technology is used appropriately will a better world be possible with its help. This course provides an overview of the areas of tension in which the digital society is moving.

At the beginning of digitization, there was initially the expectation that networked machines could take work away from people. In addition to automation and efficient production, it was also hoped that certain processes could be controlled by machines and that information could be exchanged globally in real time. What was initially intended primarily to support production processes in business ended up leading to extensive changes. Digitization has changed our work and our everyday lives. It affects production as well as people’s private lives. It is rare to see a process of change as extensive as that brought about by digitization. Some scientists therefore place it in the ranks of those industrial revolutions that previously resulted from the invention of the steam engine or electricity. However, because this technical development has such a comprehensive impact on society, its consequences can hardly be foreseen at present. Accordingly, research on digitization also comes to highly ambivalent conclusions.

Some publicists publish hymns of praise for a beautiful future in which digitization frees people from the yoke of work. Others, on the other hand, publish gloomy diagnoses. Anyone who wants to keep an eye on both opportunities and risks must think about the sensible use of technology and must not lose sight of problematic social developments. Digitization not only offers better opportunities for data exchange and networking. Technical development also brings with it a number of risks. The risk of surveillance is just one of them. There are also fears of manipulation of opinion formation through the evaluation of extensive data. In stationary retail and production, there are fears of losing the competition to online providers from all over the world if the right recipes for e-commerce are not found quickly enough themselves or if they do not successfully plug into the much-vaunted “Internet of Things. Almost all areas of society are currently discussing the opportunities and risks of digitization, and in this course, you will find everything you need to discuss it.
