Robots change the world

Robots are technical automata that can relieve humans of work activities that are burdensome for them. The dream of building such apparatuses has existed for many millennia. Today it has become reality. The robots can be located at a fixed place, as well as there are already mobile automats, which are controlled by artificial intelligence or modern computer programs. Robots can take on corresponding functions in industry as well as in the design of workplaces in companies and in the smart home. Today, they are changing the world we live in.

Industry is making particularly targeted use of robots. For example, it uses the machines in environments that are difficult for human workers to access or cannot be expected of them. A particularly impressive example is the work in radioactive areas such as around the damaged reactor of the Fukushima nuclear power plant. But robots can also relieve humans in countless other contexts. A much more widespread example of the application is, for example, work on an assembly line. Industrial robots take over the mindless repetitive mechanical activity here at a fast speed with consistent precision, replacing human workers. Many industrial robots are also used in the key industries of the Western industrialized nations, in particular. In this context, think of the automotive industry, for example.

On the other hand, it is by no means only highly specialized industry that has robots in use. Countless homes of completely normal consumers also draw on the work of robots. Automated vacuum cleaners, for example, take care of vacuuming floors or mowing lawns without the user having to intervene at every single step – modern robots control themselves. Researchers are also using robots. They are being used to explore both outer space and microscopic areas of our reality on planet Earth. In this way, the robots of the 21st century are changing the way people act. They have an equal impact on industrial production and on use in the smart home. In the so-called Internet of Things, technology is networking to enable optimal control of work processes. This is resulting in extensive changes for business and society on both a small and large scale. This eBook gives you a holistic overview of these changes.

BONUS: With this course you will receive the accompanying eBook for free! What does it offer you?

This eBook provides you with a comprehensive overview of the ways in which robots have changed and continue to change the world. It looks at the changes in industrial production as well as describing the social consequences of automation. In addition, the eBook takes a brief historical look back at the rationale behind automata and robots. In fact, these are not an idea of the 21st century. Already in the antiquity important thinkers made themselves thoughts about the development of artificial machines. Also their achievement shall not remain unmentioned in this eBook. The individual sections of the book build systematically on each other. They should therefore be read in order.

However, if you already have extensive knowledge of the subject matter in a particular subsection, you can also skip the corresponding section and continue reading the following chapter. In the formulation, a more accessible language was deliberately chosen instead of a strictly scientific way of writing. Even if you have not yet dealt with robots, this volume should give you a good introduction to the subject. Wherever relevant technical terms are used, they are explained with clear examples.

The first large section offers you a basic chapter with the most important basics. Here you will learn something about the historical background of modern technology. Thus, the philosophical discussion about the development is addressed. You will also gain important insights into the foundation of robotics as a scientific discipline. Then, the research areas of artificial intelligence and computer science are also addressed. They form the basis for the development of smart robots of our time.

The second, more extensive section of the book is then devoted to the practical use of robots. In this case, it will first be about Industry 4.0. Here you will learn about the use of industrial robots in automation processes. Then it will be about the new control potentials of smart technology. Finally, we will address the tuning of production to current demand that this type of technology makes possible. It raises the level of production to a completely new historical level. The ever new improvements in technology as well as the software used to control the robots has helped them take on more and more work. Areas that just a few years ago could only be done by humans can now be done with modern technology. This has changed entire industries. Sectors such as the textile industry are currently undergoing profound change under the influence of robots. We are on the verge of one of the greatest upheavals that industrial history has seen. You can observe it at present. Get informed and your company will soon be one of the winners of this change.

Finally, after looking at the factory, the third section of the eBook turns to the smart home. Here you will learn how robots are being used in consumers’ personal homes today and how the machines are changing the everyday lives of ordinary people. Subsequently, we will also look at the special opportunities that smart technology of this kind can offer for the design of workplaces in companies. On the one hand, the improvement of health at the workplace plays a role, on the other hand, it is about the automated adaptation of environmental conditions to individual user needs. In addition to the issue of comfort, this also addresses cost savings. So if you as a decision-maker use robots in the workplace, you can not only increase production as a result. You can also save costs in the long term with the help of smart technology. Not least for this reason, the use of robots is now considered an important investment.

The fourth section is devoted to the use of robots as modern technical toys. This can be used both as a pastime and as part of a functional use. In this context, the importance of the development of artificial intelligence in the field of computer and strategy games is addressed. After that, we will talk about automated flying robots, which you may know by the term drone.

After these opportunities, the fifth section is devoted to the challenges that robots bring with them. In particular, the social consequences of modern technology will also be examined. Here, the question will arise to what extent robots can also destroy jobs and how society reacts to this phenomenon.

Finally, the Internet of Things will also be addressed as an important infrastructure in which robots can network. This addresses a topic that is very topical, especially in the debate on economics, and is discussed at countless specialist events.

Finally, you will find a conclusion at the end of the eBook. This recapitulates the most important theses of the present text. In addition, a small outlook is given on possible developments that could arise in the next few years or decades as a result of the further development of robotics technology. The book ends with references.
