The impact of automation on commerce and society

When it comes to the advancement of production processes, automation is among the most important goals. The term has a long tradition and is used again and again to describe revolutionary upheavals in the way the economy works. Where work steps are carried out automatically with the help of machines or intelligent technology, the efficiency of production can be significantly increased.

In the history of mankind, there have been repeated pushes towards automation. With the help of new technology, progress has been taken to a new level. If entrepreneurs know how to use the available opportunities for automation, they can capitalize on them.

Although there have always been spurts of automation, mankind is currently at a special historical point. The development of digital data processing and the construction of intelligent machines is opening the door to a whole new world. But what does the division of labor between humans and intelligent technology depend on? How will this kind of automation change commerce and society?

This course offers you a comprehensive overview of exactly that. With the help of the individual chapters, you can specifically familiarize yourself with the current debate on automation.

If you are interested in the field out of private interests, the text will provide you with a good introduction. But also for entrepreneurs and managers who want to drive development processes in their company or want to establish a start-up on the market, this course can be used optimally as an introduction to the topic. As will become clear in the course of this course, automation also brings ambivalent developments, especially for the retail sector. More than any other area of economic life, personal contact with the consumer is what counts in sales. This ensures things that customers perceive as quality. These include, for example, advice from people to people, authentic exchanges in a pleasant atmosphere, and tips on the products that best meet the customer’s wishes and needs. Not all of these requirements can be met within the framework of automated processes. Sometimes automation even runs counter to these requirements.

This creates a situation in which, firstly, it must be carefully examined which type of automation makes sense in this area and which does not. Secondly, digital technology and social networks in turn also create new opportunities.

This creates sales situations that are characterized by both automation processes and personalization. This course also offers you an insight into developments of this kind.

BONUS: You will receive the accompanying eBook free of charge with this course! What does it offer you?

With this insight, you will gain systematic insight into the debate on automation and its impact in retail. The individual sections of the book build on each other in a targeted manner. If you are already well versed in a sub-area, you can skip the corresponding section if necessary. Otherwise, it is recommended that you read the book piece by piece, working your way from front to back. If you discover during this reading that you would like to deepen your knowledge in a subarea, you will also receive the appropriate tips for this.

At the end of the book you will find literature references that were used to create the eBook and may be helpful for further study of the topic. Simply select the appropriate reading references here or orient yourself to the authors listed in the index.

The first section is devoted to clarifying important terminology and phenomena. It explains what is meant by automation in general and how it develops. As another important pivotal point, reference is also made here to the concept of reproduction. It plays a major role in the digital age. The automated reproducibility of image materials is also relevant here. This is because it is of fundamental importance for the functioning of social networks as well as for marketing. Consequently, questions of automation today no longer only concern the processes that take place on the factory floor of companies. They also play a crucial role in marketing and sales.

Having outlined the two phenomena of automation and reproduction, we will now turn to the role of artificial intelligence. It is an important pillar of that technology which today allows automation and takes it away from humans. Smartphones, intelligent artifacts and self-thinking technology do not only take care of the completion of work. Intelligent technology also partly takes over the control of the work process itself. This is resulting in a new level of automation.

We are currently at the beginning of this development. It is therefore all the more important that we observe it holistically. This means that we must both support the technical development and keep an eye on the social consequences of using this technology. Not everything that is technically possible should necessarily be implemented. This eBook keeps both levels in mind – that of technical progress and that of the societal impact of technical developments.

The next section of the book then deals with the economic opportunities and the social risks of automation. A first paragraph of this part of the book will lay the necessary theoretical foundations for this. Subsequently, the eBook dedicates itself to the concrete effects in the trade. Here the question arises, how automation affects this range of the economic life. A next paragraph will dedicate itself to the ambivalences, which result from the automation processes particularly in the trade.

After all, retail depends on direct contact with the customer like few other sectors. Many entrepreneurs do not know how this requirement is to be brought together with the automation. The available eBook contributes for it important suggestions from the current debates in the economic science and in marketing.

Then the eBook deals with change possibilities with the price formation, which result from automation today and explains advantages and disadvantages, which result on the part of the consumers. However, as you will see in this section, automated pricing allows you to adopt long-term sales strategies. It can therefore be used as an efficient means of improving sales. Thus, it is not just a matter of undercutting your competitors as quickly as possible.

The last major chapter is then devoted to the social impact of automation. Here, risks are explained, but also opportunities that can arise in the context of digital disruption. This section also explains new ways that retailers can choose to deal with the situation. Especially if you are active in brick-and-mortar retail yourself or run an online sales operation, these tips could offer important suggestions.

Possible future developments in sales that are not currently practiced also come up in this last major section of the eBook. Think of these simply as suggestions from which you can develop your own practice proposals. After a final conclusion on the subject area of automation, you will find literature references at the end of the book. These can help you to deepen your knowledge of the subject.

If, in turn, you would like to deal with the general framework of digitalization and Industry 4.0, please also refer to the corresponding volumes in this series.
